Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic Fan for Corrosive Gas and Industrial Exhaust Applications

When an industrial ventilation system has to handle corrosive gas, humid air, chemical fumes, or other difficult process gases, the fan material becomes a very important part of the equipment. In these conditions, simply choosing a standard metal fan may not be enough. The casing and impeller are continuously exposed to the working gas, and material compatibility can directly affect maintenance, service life, and operating stability.

That is where our Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic Fan comes into consideration. We manufacture industrial fans for applications where corrosion resistance is an important requirement. Fiberglass reinforced plastic, commonly called FRP, combines a resin matrix with glass fiber reinforcement. The result is a lightweight engineering material that can be designed for demanding ventilation and exhaust applications.

At Zhejiang Shangyang Industrial Fan Co., Ltd., we specialize in industrial Centrifugal Fans and related ventilation equipment. Our sales company is located in Shanghai, China, while our factory is located at No. 6-8, Bifa Road, Xinbi Subdistrict, Jinyun County, Lishui City, Zhejiang Province. Our fan technology design, manufacturing, and sales teams have around 20 years of experience.

Over the years, we have developed and supplied fans for coating, environmental protection, chemical, boiler, kiln, thermal energy, dust collection, printing, pharmaceutical, food processing, wastewater treatment, and other industrial applications. We also manufacture standard and nonstandard centrifugal fans according to actual operating conditions.

For an FRP Industrial Fan, we pay particular attention to the gas being handled. Air volume and pressure are important, but they are not the whole story. Gas temperature, humidity, chemical composition, concentration, dust content, installation position, operating hours, motor power, and maintenance conditions can all affect the final design.

Our approach is simple: first understand what the fan has to do, then select the right structure and material. This avoids a common problem in industrial ventilation projects—buying a fan that looks suitable on paper but does not match the actual process.

1. What Is a Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic Fan?

A Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic Fan is an Industrial Ventilation Fan made with fiberglass reinforced plastic components, usually based on a suitable resin system and reinforced with glass fibers. The exact material formulation depends on the application and required chemical resistance.

In simple terms, the resin provides the basic body of the material, while the glass fibers help reinforce it. This gives FRP a useful combination of relatively low weight, structural strength, and resistance to many corrosive environments.

For fan applications, FRP can be used for components such as the fan casing and impeller, depending on the design. Other parts, including shafts, bearings, motors, fasteners, and supports, may use different materials because they have different mechanical or temperature requirements.

This is one reason we do not describe an FRP fan as being made from “one material.” A complete industrial fan is a mechanical system made up of several components. Each component needs to perform its own job.

Our FRP Centrifugal Fan normally uses the centrifugal principle. Gas enters the center of the impeller, the rotating impeller transfers energy to the gas, and the gas moves outward toward the casing. The casing then guides the gas to the discharge outlet.

The result is a fan that can move a large volume of gas while developing pressure to overcome resistance in ducts and connected equipment. This makes centrifugal fans particularly useful for industrial exhaust systems where the airflow has to pass through long ducts, filters, scrubbers, dampers, hoods, or other process equipment.

Source note: These are practical fan-selection parameters. ISO 5801:2017 provides procedures for determining fan performance, including the effects of changes in speed, gas handled, and other test conditions.

2. How Our FRP Centrifugal Fan Works

The operating principle is easy to understand.

First, the process gas enters through the fan inlet. The motor turns the impeller at the required speed. As the impeller rotates, its blades transfer energy to the gas and push it outward. The gas then enters the fan casing and is directed toward the discharge outlet.

It sounds simple, but the real engineering work is in making the fan operate properly at the customer's required airflow and pressure.

For example, imagine a chemical exhaust system with a large hood connected to several meters of ductwork. The system may also include elbows, dampers, filters, or a scrubber. Every one of these components creates resistance. The fan needs enough pressure to overcome that resistance while still providing the required airflow.

This is why we normally ask for both airflow and pressure when selecting a fan. If a customer tells us only “I need 10,000 m³/h,” we still do not know enough to choose the correct fan. A system with very low resistance and a system with a large scrubber and long duct can require very different fan performance.

Fan installation also matters. A fan tested under standardized laboratory conditions may perform differently after being connected to an actual duct system. ISO/TR 16219:2024 specifically addresses system effects and the possible degradation between standardized fan testing and actual site conditions.

In practice, we therefore look at the complete airflow path whenever possible. The fan inlet, outlet, elbows, dampers, duct transitions, and connected equipment all form part of the system.

Why centrifugal design is useful for industrial exhaust

A simple ventilation fan may be suitable for moving air in an open space, but industrial exhaust systems are usually more complicated. The gas often has to travel through ducts and process equipment.

A centrifugal fan is well suited to these systems because it can be designed to develop the pressure required by the system. Depending on the impeller design and operating point, the fan can be configured for different combinations of airflow and pressure.

For this reason, our FRP Chemical Exhaust Fan solutions are normally selected around the complete exhaust system rather than just the fan motor.

3. Why Choose Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic?

The main reason customers consider FRP is corrosion resistance.

Industrial exhaust gases can contain acid vapors, alkaline substances, solvents, moisture, salts, and other chemicals. When these gases contact metal surfaces continuously, corrosion can become a serious maintenance issue.

FRP can provide good resistance to many corrosive environments when the resin system and construction are properly selected for the actual chemical exposure. But there is an important point here: FRP is not automatically resistant to every chemical.

Different resins have different chemical resistance. Temperature also changes material behavior. A chemical that is handled successfully at one temperature may create a much more demanding condition at a higher temperature.

That is why we prefer to know the actual process conditions before confirming the FRP material configuration.

Lightweight construction

Compared with many traditional metal constructions, FRP components can be relatively lightweight. This can be useful during equipment handling and installation, especially for larger ventilation equipment.

However, lightweight does not mean weak. The structure has to be designed according to the fan's rotational speed, pressure, size, and mechanical loads. We pay attention to the reinforcement and structural arrangement instead of simply reducing material thickness.

Corrosion resistance

For chemical exhaust, wastewater treatment, fume extraction, and environmental protection systems, corrosion resistance can be one of the most important reasons to choose an FRP fan.

When the material is compatible with the process gas, the fan can help reduce problems associated with corrosion of the casing and impeller. This can be especially useful in systems that operate continuously or for long working hours.

Moisture resistance

Many industrial exhaust systems are not handling dry air. Wastewater treatment, chemical processing, washing systems, and environmental equipment can generate humid gas.

An appropriate FRP construction can be useful in these conditions because moisture itself is not the same problem for FRP as it can be for ordinary carbon steel. Still, the complete fan must be designed correctly, including bearings, shafts, fasteners, motor protection, and drainage where required.

Good fit for environmental protection systems

FRP fans are commonly considered for systems that collect and treat contaminated air before it is discharged. These systems may include scrubbers, adsorption equipment, filters, odor-control systems, and chemical exhaust ducts.

The fan is usually located somewhere in the airflow path and may continuously handle the treated or untreated process gas. Material compatibility is therefore an important part of the equipment selection.

FeatureFRP ConstructionTypical Practical Benefit
Corrosion resistanceCan be designed for many corrosive environmentsUseful for chemical exhaust and environmental systems

Moisture exposureSuitable for selected humid applicationsUseful in wastewater and wet exhaust systems
Material customizationResin and reinforcement can be selected for application needsAllows different chemical environments to be considered
Temperature limitationDepends strongly on resin system and designRequires temperature confirmation before selection

Source note: The table describes practical material-selection considerations rather than universal performance ratings. FRP chemical resistance depends on the resin, reinforcement, chemical concentration, temperature, exposure time, and construction. Specific material compatibility should therefore be confirmed for each project.

4. Technical Advantages of Our Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic Fan

When we design an FRP Industrial Exhaust Fan, we do not focus on material alone. The fan still has to perform as a fan.

Correct airflow and pressure selection

The first technical requirement is to match the fan to the operating point. Airflow tells us how much gas needs to move. Pressure tells us how much resistance the fan needs to overcome.

These two values should always be considered together.

ANSI/AMCA 210-25 defines laboratory methods for determining fan aerodynamic performance in terms of airflow rate, pressure, power consumption, air density, rotational speed, and efficiency. This provides a useful framework for comparing fan performance under controlled test conditions.

Performance ParameterWhat It Tells UsWhy It Matters
Airflow rateVolume of gas moved by the fanDetermines ventilation or exhaust capacity
PressurePressure developed by the fanDetermines ability to overcome system resistance
PowerEnergy required to drive the fanHelps select the motor
SpeedImpeller rotational speedAffects airflow, pressure and mechanical load
EfficiencyRelationship between useful air power and input powerUseful for energy and operating-cost evaluation

Stable impeller operation

The impeller is the heart of a centrifugal fan. Its shape affects airflow, pressure, noise, and power demand. Its balance affects vibration.

For this reason, we pay close attention to impeller fabrication and assembly. A fan may have excellent corrosion resistance but still be a poor product if the rotating assembly is not manufactured accurately.

Suitable structure for corrosive environments

We consider more than just the casing. If the process gas can contact the impeller, shaft area, fasteners, or other exposed parts, these components need to be considered as part of the material-selection process.

This is particularly important in chemical exhaust applications. A small metal component can become a weak point if it is exposed to an aggressive environment for a long period.

Customized fan configuration

Industrial projects often have limited space or unusual duct arrangements. Our factory produces both standard and nonstandard industrial fans, so we can discuss customized fan dimensions, inlet and outlet arrangements, motor configuration, drive arrangement, rotation direction, and other project requirements.

5. Where Is a Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic Fan Used?

Our Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic Fan is mainly considered for industrial environments where corrosion resistance is more important than using a conventional metal fan.

Chemical plants

Chemical production is one of the most common application areas. Process exhaust can contain acidic, alkaline, solvent-based, or humid gases.

An FRP Chemical Exhaust Fan can be used to remove process gas from production equipment, ventilation hoods, chemical storage areas, reaction systems, and other exhaust points, provided the selected FRP system is compatible with the gas.

Wastewater treatment

Wastewater treatment systems can produce unpleasant and corrosive gases. Ventilation may be required around tanks, treatment areas, chemical dosing equipment, and enclosed process spaces.

Because these environments can be humid and chemically active, an FRP ventilation fan can be a practical choice for suitable exhaust systems.

Coating and painting lines

Coating lines can generate solvent vapors, paint mist, moisture, and heat. Exhaust fans need to move the process air reliably while handling the specific conditions of the coating system.

Our company has long experience in coating fan and environmental protection fan applications, so we understand that fan selection needs to be connected with the entire coating line.

Environmental protection equipment

Environmental systems often include scrubbers, filters, adsorption equipment, and odor treatment units. The exhaust fan may be installed before or after one of these treatment stages.

The location of the fan changes the gas conditions it sees. For example, a fan installed downstream of a wet scrubber may handle cooler and more humid gas than a fan installed upstream. This difference needs to be considered during material selection.

Pharmaceutical applications

Pharmaceutical production may require exhaust systems for process gases, solvents, humid air, or chemical cleaning operations. Depending on the process, FRP can be considered when corrosion resistance is needed.

Food processing

Food processing facilities can involve moisture, cleaning chemicals, steam, and process odors. An appropriate FRP fan may be used in selected ventilation or exhaust systems where material compatibility has been confirmed.

Laboratory and special exhaust systems

Laboratories and specialized production environments can generate chemical fumes that should not be released directly into the working area. A properly selected FRP fume extraction fan can be part of the exhaust system.

6. Our FRP Fan Manufacturing Process

Manufacturing an FRP fan is different from simply cutting and welding a metal fan. The material process, reinforcement, resin selection, forming, curing, assembly, and final inspection all need to be controlled.

Step 1: Understand the process gas

Before production, we first confirm what the fan will handle. We ask about airflow, pressure, gas temperature, chemical composition, concentration, humidity, dust, operating hours, and installation conditions.

If the customer knows the chemical name and concentration, that information is especially useful. If there is a process flow diagram or exhaust-system drawing, we can also use it to understand the application.

Step 2: Select the appropriate FRP system

Not all FRP is identical. Resin selection is important because different chemical environments require different levels of resistance.

We therefore avoid using one material formula for every application. The actual process conditions determine the appropriate material and construction approach.

Step 3: Manufacture the fan casing

The casing is formed according to the approved design. The shape needs to provide a suitable gas path while maintaining adequate structural strength.

For larger fans, reinforcement and support structure become particularly important. The casing should remain stable during operation and transportation.

Step 4: Manufacture the impeller

The impeller is manufactured according to the required aerodynamic design. Blade shape, diameter, width, angle, and rotational speed all affect the fan's performance.

We pay particular attention to the rotating assembly because vibration is not something that should be “fixed later.” Good fabrication and balance are important from the beginning.

Step 5: Assemble the mechanical components

The motor, shaft, bearings, supports, fasteners, and other components are assembled according to the fan configuration.

Where the process gas is corrosive, exposed metal parts also need to be considered. The goal is to avoid creating a material mismatch between the main FRP structure and small components exposed to the same gas.

Step 6: Final inspection

Before delivery, we inspect the fan's appearance, dimensions, rotation direction, assembly condition, and operating condition. Acceptance is performed according to the agreed contract and technical requirements.

Our company possesses multiple national test reports for specialized products and has obtained national explosion-proof certification, energy efficiency certification, and other certifications for applicable products. Certification requirements depend on the exact product and application, so we confirm the applicable documents for each project instead of making a general claim for every fan.

7. How We Select the Right FRP Industrial Fan

Choosing the right Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic Fan Manufacturer is only one part of the project. The fan itself also needs to be correctly selected.

I normally recommend starting with five basic questions.

1. How much gas needs to be moved?

This is the required airflow. It may be provided in m³/h, m³/s, CFM, or another unit.

2. How much pressure is required?

This depends on duct length, elbows, filters, scrubbers, dampers, hoods, and other equipment. If pressure is underestimated, the fan may not deliver the required airflow after installation.

3. What exactly is in the gas?

This is especially important for FRP fans. We want to know whether the gas contains acid, alkali, solvent, chloride, salt, moisture, dust, or other substances.

4. What is the gas temperature?

Temperature affects both the material and the complete mechanical design. FRP is not a universal choice for every high-temperature application. If the gas temperature is high, we need to check the resin system, structural design, bearings, shaft, seals, and other components.

5. How will the fan be installed?

We need to understand the inlet and outlet arrangement, available space, duct direction, maintenance access, motor location, and support structure.

This approach may take a little more time at the beginning, but it can prevent much bigger problems after installation.

8. Why Choose Zhejiang Shangyang Industrial Fan Co., Ltd.?

We have been involved in industrial fan design, manufacturing, and sales for around 20 years. Our experience covers not only standard centrifugal fans but also High-Temperature Fans, induced draft fans, axial fans, low-noise fans, High-Pressure Fans, Stainless Steel Fans, hot air circulating fans, mixing fans, and explosion-proof centrifugal fans.

Our development experience comes from real industrial applications. We have worked with coating fans and environmental protection fans for many years and have continued to improve, refine, and optimize related products.

Our factory is equipped to manufacture standard and nonstandard industrial fans. This is important because industrial exhaust systems are often different from one project to another. A fan for a chemical plant may have completely different requirements from a fan for a food processing line.

We also have experience with customers who need supporting equipment for larger systems. The fan may be connected to a scrubber, dust collector, coating line, kiln, boiler, thermal equipment, or other process machinery.

Our products are used in coating, kiln, boiler, environmental protection and dust collection, thermal energy, printing, coating equipment, medical latex equipment, air-supported membrane, separation, cement, chemical, and food industries. We supply customers throughout China and also export industrial fan equipment overseas.

We believe that the most useful manufacturer is not the one that simply gives a product name and price. A good industrial fan supplier should be able to ask the right questions before production.

For example, if a customer asks for an “FRP Corrosion Resistant Fan,” we want to know what is actually being exhausted. If the gas contains a strong chemical at elevated temperature, the correct answer may depend on the resin system. If the system has a long duct and a scrubber, pressure becomes critical. If the fan operates 24 hours a day, mechanical reliability deserves more attention.

That is the way we approach each project.

Production Time, Inspection, Delivery and Packaging

The production cycle of our Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic Fan depends on fan size, airflow, pressure, material configuration, motor power, customization, and production schedule.

Standard products can generally have a shorter lead time. Customized fans require additional design, material preparation, manufacturing, assembly, and inspection time.

Before delivery, we inspect the fan according to the agreed technical requirements. We pay attention to appearance, dimensions, rotation direction, assembly condition, and operating condition.

Payment is typically arranged by T/T, subject to the individual contract.

For transportation, we can use road, sea, or rail transportation depending on the equipment size, destination, delivery schedule, and customer preference.

For packaging, we normally use protective film, wooden crates, or reinforced steel frames according to the fan size and transportation method. The casing, motor, bearings, shaft, and other important parts receive particular protection during shipment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic Fans

What is a Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic Fan?

A Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic Fan is an industrial fan that uses FRP material for selected structural components, commonly the casing and/or impeller. It is mainly considered for ventilation and exhaust applications where corrosion resistance and low material weight are useful.

What is FRP?

FRP means Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic. It combines a polymer resin with glass fiber reinforcement. The resin provides the main chemical-resistant body of the material, while the glass fibers help improve mechanical strength and structural performance.

Is an FRP fan suitable for corrosive gas?

Yes, FRP fans are widely considered for corrosive gas exhaust applications. However, the exact chemical resistance depends on the resin, chemical concentration, temperature, exposure time, and other conditions. We recommend providing the gas composition before confirming the material.

Can an FRP fan handle high temperatures?

FRP has temperature limitations that depend strongly on the resin system and construction. We do not recommend assuming that an FRP fan can handle any high-temperature gas simply because it is corrosion resistant. For high-temperature applications, we evaluate the actual temperature and operating conditions first.

Can you manufacture a customized FRP centrifugal fan?

Yes. We manufacture both standard and nonstandard industrial fans. Depending on the project, we can discuss fan dimensions, airflow, pressure, material configuration, motor power, inlet and outlet arrangement, rotation direction, drive arrangement, and installation requirements.

What industries use FRP industrial fans?

Typical applications include chemical plants, pharmaceutical production, coating lines, wastewater treatment, environmental protection systems, fume extraction, odor-control systems, food processing, laboratories, and other industrial ventilation applications where corrosion resistance is important.

Is an FRP fan lighter than a metal fan?

FRP components can be relatively lightweight compared with many metal constructions. This can make handling and installation easier in some projects. The actual fan weight depends on size, reinforcement, structure, motor, bearings, and other components.

How do I select the right FRP centrifugal fan?

Provide the required airflow, pressure, gas temperature, gas composition, humidity, dust content, operating hours, installation conditions, and power supply. These details allow us to evaluate the fan structure and material more accurately.

Can an FRP fan be used for chemical exhaust?

Yes. Chemical exhaust is one of the main application areas for corrosion-resistant FRP fans. The important point is matching the resin and fan construction to the actual chemical environment.

How long is the production lead time?

The lead time depends on fan size, specifications, material, motor, customization, and production schedule. Standard products generally require less production time, while customized FRP industrial fans require additional manufacturing time.

How do you package FRP fans for overseas shipping?

We use protective film, wooden crates, reinforced steel frames, or a suitable combination depending on the equipment size and transportation method. The purpose is to protect the casing, motor, bearings, shaft, and other important components during transportation.

What Information Should I Send for a Fan Quotation?

If you are looking for an FRP Centrifugal Fan or Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic Industrial Fan, you do not need to prepare a complicated technical specification before contacting us.

Send us the information you already have. Even a basic process description can help us understand the application.

  • Required airflow

  • Required static or total pressure

  • Normal gas temperature

  • Maximum gas temperature

  • Chemical composition of the gas

  • Chemical concentration where available

  • Humidity or moisture conditions

  • Dust or particle concentration

  • Motor power or electrical supply

  • Fan installation space

  • Inlet and outlet direction

  • Continuous or intermittent operation

  • Required delivery location

If you have a system drawing, equipment layout, duct drawing, or previous fan specification, that is also useful. We can use these details to discuss whether an FRP construction is suitable and what type of centrifugal fan configuration should be considered.

Conclusion: Choosing the Right FRP Fan for the Real Working Condition

A Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic Fan is a practical choice for many industrial exhaust and ventilation systems where corrosion resistance is an important concern. It can be particularly useful for chemical exhaust, wastewater treatment, coating systems, environmental protection equipment, fume extraction, and other applications involving corrosive or humid gases.

But I would not recommend choosing an FRP fan simply because the product name says “corrosion resistant.” The actual gas, chemical concentration, temperature, airflow, pressure, installation arrangement, and operating schedule all need to be considered.

That is the approach we use at Zhejiang Shangyang Industrial Fan Co., Ltd. We start with the process conditions, then consider the material, fan structure, impeller, motor, bearings, installation, and other details.

Our experience covers standard and nonstandard Industrial Centrifugal Fans, high-temperature fans, induced draft fans, axial fans, low-noise fans, high-pressure fans, stainless steel fans, hot air circulating fans, mixing fans, and explosion-proof centrifugal fans. This allows us to look at an FRP fan as part of a complete ventilation system rather than as an isolated piece of equipment.

For a chemical exhaust system, environmental protection project, coating line, wastewater treatment plant, pharmaceutical facility, food processing plant, or other industrial application, the right fan starts with the right information.

If you can provide the airflow, pressure, gas composition, temperature, and installation requirements, we can evaluate the application and recommend a suitable Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic Fan configuration for your project.
